California-specific FAQs

Q. How do I find the sales tax rate for my California city or ZIP code?

California sales tax is set by district, so the rate changes by city and even by ZIP code within the same county. Check the major-city table above for the combined rate where you are shopping β€” for example Los Angeles is 9.50%, San Francisco 8.625%, and San Diego 7.75%. For an exact ZIP-level rate, look up your address on the CDTFA rate lookup tool, then enter that rate in the calculator's "Custom rate" mode.

Q. Why does my California receipt show 9.25% but the calculator says 8.85%?

The calculator uses the state average. Major cities including Los Angeles (9.50%), Long Beach (10.25%), and South Gate (10.25%) carry above-average local additions. Switch to "Custom rate" mode in the calculator and enter your actual city rate from your receipt.

Q. Is California sales tax different for online purchases?

No β€” California requires marketplace facilitators (Amazon, eBay) and remote sellers with over $500K in California sales to collect sales tax based on the buyer's shipping address. Your local rate applies.

Q. What is exempt from California sales tax?

Most groceries (unprepared food), prescription drugs, and certain medical devices are exempt. Restaurant meals, hot prepared food, and dietary supplements are taxable. Clothing has no special exemption.
