Texas sales tax in context

Texas charges 6.25% statewide and caps local additions at 2.00%, so the maximum combined rate is 8.25%. Most major Texas cities (Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio) hit the cap. The state has no personal income tax, making sales tax a larger revenue source than in most states.

Texas-specific FAQs

Q. Why is the Texas combined cap exactly 8.25%?

Texas state law caps total local sales tax (city + county + transit + special district) at 2.00%, on top of the 6.25% state rate. Once a city reaches the 2% local cap, no further taxing jurisdiction in that area can add more.

Q. Does Texas have sales tax holidays?

Yes β€” Texas runs three annual holidays: a back-to-school holiday (early August) exempting clothing and school supplies under $100, an Energy Star products holiday (Memorial Day weekend), and an emergency preparation holiday (late April).

Q. Do I owe Texas sales tax if I sell online to Texas customers from out of state?

Yes if you exceed the economic nexus threshold: $500,000 in Texas sales in the preceding 12 months. Below that, registration is optional. Marketplace facilitators (Amazon, Etsy) generally handle collection for their sellers.
